‘All those little things – make sure you do them’: Guruzeta’s road from injury table to success with Athletic Bilbao
Thehe initial occasion Gorka Guruzeta competed in England, an 18-year-old appearing for the youth squad against Borussia Mönchengladbach Under-23s at Adams Park in the 2015 season, he scored. The second time he took the field in the country, against Sunderland two months later, he converted. Another occasion, against Manchester City not long later, sure enough, he scored again. As he revisited to Manchester to play against the Red Devils at Leigh’s ground in that year, he scored again. A spectacular strike, too. “In fact,” he remarks, “it ranks among my finest I’ve netted.” Thus the club did what was necessary: they took him off.
“I got well angry,” the attacker says, then chuckling. “Probably there’s a recording. Our match against United and I was pretty good. They kept me out of the latter period: my contract wasn’t finalized deal, goals were flowing, many stories circulated, you know how it is. No confirmation on the Magpies’ pursuit, but I came across reports about the Red Devils, the typical thing. I’m not certain if it was accurate, but had they contacted me, I would have wanted to stay at Athletic. It’s a privilege.”
La Real relieve strain with extraordinary derby triumph
At Lezama, the Basque Country, the early training is set to begin; following that, the quick travel to the airport and another trip to England, on this occasion to play Newcastle in the Champions League on the upcoming match. Just saying those two words brings a smile to his face. This is proving a tough year for the team, partly because of the requirements of being here. Defeated late on in the derby on Saturday, they have managed just one win of their last eight matches and lost against Arsenal and Borussia Dortmund in European competition. Yet, look at the overall situation, the major occasions he’s experienced and those that lie ahead, and there’s a kind of quiet appreciation within him.
In the 36 months since he had come back to Athletic, Gorka has been a semi-final participant, stopped at the gates a final at home by United, and has boarded a decades-old barge through the waterway surrounded by a huge crowd after securing the Spanish cup, the first title in a long wait. Now he is the club’s leading marksman in the Champions League, where they are unique and debuting in ten years. “I never imagined this,” he states.
Guruzeta thought it difficult enough just to earn a spot and his assessment was correct. The son of the one-time rival player the former professional and a season ticket holder at the opposition side, Gorka is a product of Antiguoko, the San Sebastián club that nurtured Mikel Arteta, Xabi Alonso and the Bournemouth manager. He joined Athletic at 17 but after his top-level debut in August 2018, he experienced a serious knee problem, dropped, a drop in category and a return before he could truly get a chance, coming back aged 26 to enjoy the highlights of their lives.
“Joining the setup thinking you won’t reach the top level but each step you progress through you’re still there and you can observe the approach. You get there but … departure is necessary.” He played six, nine, five, one, four and 20 minutes in six games between his debut and February 2019. “Subsequently I returned to the filial [Bilbao Athletic, the Under-23s]. Five, six games at that level and I suffered the ACL injury.
“A severe disappointment but I reflect on it as a beneficial experience because it shifted the outlook. Healing from a serious ailment is hard, but it aids growth. You cultivate routines you didn’t have. Previously I was casual, but I would go to training and then head home, typical youth behavior. At Lezama, all resources are available, so do everything. Practice, prevention. Strength training. Should your hips be uneven, address that. If your ankles are a 10, make it a 12 or a 14. All those ‘silly things’: do them.
“In the first team you’re going to face physical challenges who have experienced contact 200,000 times. They’re so strong. Reviewing old images: my legs are chicken legs. Thus incidents occur. Present-day images and the improvement is clear. Recovery revealed that. Training finishes, but there’s more to do. Teammates are set, really ready; the same applies.”
You also have to play. The striker moved in tears in the pandemic season, at 23 years old, joining the second tier. With Sabadell in that season, he scored three times in numerous matches. With Amorebieta in the following period, the scoring picked up. “It’s a common path: loans, terminated contracts. Should you reverse it, effort, faith, and should the time come a vacancy arises where you play, recall is possible. Readiness is vital. When the opportunity came, it was a dream come true. To then win the Copa del Rey, European football, and reach the Champions League … pfff.”
Little surprise he states appreciate the experience. Particularly after the previous season which, sometimes, was about endurance. From top scorer with a high tally, his output dropped to seven in {15 games more|additional matches|
