Three members of law enforcement were killed and no fewer than 15 additional individuals were hurt in an apparently deliberate blast caused by gas at a farmhouse in the northern part of Italy.

Sequence of Events

The blast occurred as officers and emergency crews went into the property in the vicinity of Verona to carry out an court-ordered eviction for two brothers and a sister in their late 50s and mid-60s.

Each of the three officers killed were members of the Carabinieri force.

Investigation Developments

A man and a woman were arrested at the site and another man who escaped subsequent to the blast was apprehended not long after. The trio have been admitted to medical facility.

The blast could be audible approximately 5 kilometers away and photographs from the scene revealed the structure turned into a pile of rubble.

“This is a time for grieving,” commented Interior Minister the Interior Minister, who added that attempts had been made to displace the brother and sister trio in the past.

Background and Motive

The head of the region of Veneto, Luca Zaia, explained the property was subject to an court order due to financial obligations accumulated by the property owners.

Negotiators had been dispatched to engage the family members who had locked themselves into the property. When the officers came just after 03:00 (01:00 GMT), investigators suspect one of the siblings set off the detonation.

“Upon entering the house, we were confronted with an act of absolute madness,” provincial police commander the police commander informed reporters.

A propane tank had been set off, and the explosion precisely impacted our members,” he added.

Molotov cocktails were also located at the property, the minister confirmed.

Injuries and Destruction

Injured individuals by the explosion comprised an additional 11 personnel of the Carabinieri as well as three officers of national police and a emergency responder.

According to the local prosecutor, the building was in a dilapidated shape and had was without power.

The official thought the blast had happened on a level above the entrance and told reporters it was a “deliberate and pre-planned murder”. Just prior to the blast, he said personnel had “noticed a hissing sound, probably the propane tanks being turned on”.

Neighbor Statements

“We all knew the situation was dire,” neighbors stated to reporters, noting that the family members had in the past stated to “detonate the property” rather than leave the house.

“The blast resulted in a ‘horrific, deeply distressing and tragic cost’.”

Defence Minister Guido Crosetto joined other political leaders in honoring the three officers who had been killed in the service of their country.
