Manchester United Poised to Secure Germany Striker Lea Schüller away from Bayern Munich

Manchester United are on the verge of sealing the deal for prolific German forward Lea Schüller in a permanent move away from Bayern Munich.

A Marquee Signing for United

The forward, with half a year remaining on her contract, has been a consistent goal-getter for her club and the national team. She has scored more than 100 goals for Bayern and found the net 54 times in 82 appearances for Germany. Her arrival will be seen as a marquee signing for the WSL side.

Departure from Munich was expected since she was seen holding back emotions while thanking the club's fans after a victory over Bayer Leverkusen this month.

Reports in December that the German women's top flight was losing one of its top strikers. According to multiple sources, all the paperwork for the move are now finalised.

Reliable Goal Threat to Boost the Attack

The experienced striker's signing is expected to provide a significant boost to United’s forward line. Schüller has been highly consistent in front of goal in Germany’s top flight.

  • For seven consecutive seasons, up to and including the most recent campaign, she reached at least a double-digit tally of league goals.
  • She won the top scorer award in the 2021-22 season with a haul of 16 goals.

Gathering Momentum at Old Trafford

Securing the German international coincides with a period when the club appear to be building positive momentum.

Recent performances feature qualifying for the Champions League knockout phase playoffs in a seeded position and a victory in the Conti Cup quarter-finals.

Off the pitch, the mid-season window has brought additional activity:

  1. The signing of Sweden defender Hanna Lundkvist on a three-and-a-half-year deal.
  2. The contract extension for Japanese playmaker Hinata Miyazawa, who has become fan favourite since arriving in 2023.

On the midfielder's extension, a senior figure commented: “She has become a critical part to the way we play. Her footballing intelligence and skill enables her and the team to dominate play from the middle of the park.”

Lundkvist, who has arrived from a side from the NWSL, added: “You can feel how much the club have progressed in the last few years, playing in one of the strongest leagues in the world and now featuring in the Champions League.”
