The Fashion Icon Antony Price, Renowned for Designing for Bowie and Duran Duran, Has Died Aged 80.
Fashion legend Antony Price, the influential style architect behind a series of unforgettable images associated with musical icons like Bowie and members of Roxy Music, as well as Queen Camilla, has died aged 80.
His reputation was built on his architectural shapes and performative fashion, such as the soft-colored suits that featured in the pop-rock group Duran Duran's classic music video for "Rio".
"In a tribute, they called him a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' the group posted a remembrance online."
His passing follows less than a month after he debuted his most recent collection in London, which was his first major show in over 30 years. Singer Lily Allen modelled a dress that paid homage to the famous black velvet "so-called 'revenge dress'" historically worn by Princess Diana.
An Enduring Influence
A native of Yorkshire, born in 1945, Price relocated to London in the early 1960s to enroll at the esteemed Royal College of Art.
Upon completing his studies, he began designing men's fashion at the company Stirling Copper and was behind the tight, button-detailed trousers that The Rolling Stones' frontman Mick Jagger wore during The Rolling Stones' Gimme Shelter tour in 1969.
He launched his own brand in 1979 and presented his inaugural collection a year later. The show featured as its opener looks from model Jerry Hall, who also wore the bridal gown Price designed for her for her nuptials with Sir Mick Jagger.
Working with Legends
A frequent collaborator of the late David Bowie, Price was the mind behind the memorable jacket the singer wore for his "As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.
His trademark skill to merge elements of men's and women's fashion along with his expert craftsmanship in crafting sculptural silhouettes made him a "true original," as stated by the British Fashion Council.
During the nineties, he began working on outfits for Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, such as several ensembles for her tour of the United States after becoming Duchess.
After a career spanning half a century, Price presented his final runway show in London recently in partnership with the design house 16Arlington.
