The network's Leading New Show of This Year Earns a Major Renewal for an Additional Two Seasons.
In October of last year, the late-night programming block saw the return of its unconventional hit, Smiling Friends. Yet, shortly thereafter, the channel unveiled a fresh animated series with a strikingly different tone. Haha, You Clowns was gentle and comforting, in the spirit of a cartoon version of a laid-back talk show. In an era often defined by dark humor, this show's sincerity struck a chord and helped it become a surprise hit.
A Significant Investment
In mid-December, Adult Swim confirmed a big renewal: Haha, You Clowns has been greenlit for two additional seasons. This gives showrunner Joe Cappa ample opportunity to expand upon the story of the Campbell family. The series centers on three polite teenage brothers whose defining trait is their deep love for their single father, with Cappa providing the voices for all four key characters.
"My deepest thanks go to the fans of the show who took a chance on the show and spread the word," remarked Cappa. "I am overjoyed that I get to spend more time in the Campbell household for seasons to come."
A President's Endorsement
In the same announcement commendation from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who called the series as "radically heartfelt and strangely uncanny." He shouted out the fans who discovered the show and championed its uniquely offbeat sensibility.
"All of you showed up for this new show, praised it on social media, and helped it grow week over week so we could approve not one, but two more seasons," noted Ouweleen. "In the words: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"
A Wholesome Alternative
Upon its debut, Haha, You Clowns was hailed as "a gentle counterpart" to other adult animated fare. It offers something deeply soothing about following this lovable family navigate their daily lives.
In earlier interviews, creator Joe Cappa stated his goal to help comedy break out of its prevailing cynical streak. He linked this trend to the rise of certain blockbuster franchises.
“It feels like there's a default mode of irony that we keep returning to,” noted Cappa. “It feels as if we have to know we’re the cleverest viewer in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for a decade, and we just have to laugh at something different now. Comedy has to evolve.”
The Path Forward
Given this two-season order, with Haha, You Clowns locked in for the future, Cappa has the opportunity to help usher in that comedic shift. If nothing else, the renewal guarantees audiences a little more time to experience the gentle humor of the beloved Campbell clan.
The first season's conclusion of Haha, You Clowns airs on December 21st. All episodes is available for streaming on HBO Max.
